ATHENS, GREECE-(19-2-2003) Athens Eurolymp, the first ISAF Graded European event of 2003, opened in Athens on 18 February. With Grade 2 points up for grabs in all events, competition is close.
Europe
The world’s number one ranked Europe sailor, Sari Multala (FIN) has opened the series in the way she intends to continue, ahead. With a bullet and two seconds, her consistency is already evident. Some good opening results for world ranked number 22, Manon Borsi (FRA), who is just 3 points adrift of the leader.

Laser
The 78 strong Laser fleet is being led by world ranked number 2, Kalle Suneson (SWE), after 3 races. With an opening 10th place, Kalle pulled himself up to post a 2nd and 4th, giving him a reasonable margin over the chasing Mate Arapov (CRO). However, at this early stage there is of course all to play for. Anders Nyholm (DEN), world ranked 29th, will be pleased with his third overall performance to date.

Finn
Another Crotian sailor, Viali Nenad, is looking strong in the Finn fleet, no doubt to the consternation of world ranked number 1 Emilios Papathanasio, who is current fifth overall after two races. Nenad is currently ranked 25th in the world.
A relatively small 20-boat, 9 nation fleet, will give some of the lower ranked sailors an opportunity to gain valuable ranking points.

Tornado
Excellent consistency for Sven Karsenbarg and Mischa Heemskerk (NED) sees them with a clear 6-point margin after three races. World ranking leaders, Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher (AUT) sit in fourth place. A pleasing result in this 22 boat fleet for local sailors Dimitrios Theodorakis and Antonis Bougiouris (GRE) who are ranked 58th in the world, and on equal points with Hagara/Steinacher. This duo are clearly showing some good form, as they first entered the world rankings in July 2002, ranked 100, taking just over 6 months to move up to their current position.

470 – Men and Women
Not surprisingly, local boys Andreas Kosmatopolous and Konstantinos Trigonis are sailing to form, and despite no wins, their consistency leaves them ahead of the more variable placings of the rest of the fleet. Croatian brothers Tomislav and Petar Cupca, ranked number 23 in the world lie in second, but on equal points with the third placed sailors Panayotis Kambouridis and Angelos Lemanis (GRE).
Over in the 12-boat women’s fleet, reigning world champions and 2002 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year winners Sofia Bekatorou and Emilia Tsoulfa (GRE) surprisingly lie in 4th, behind the third and second placed British crews. Out in the lead are world ranked number 10, Ingrid Petitjean and Nadege Douroux (FRA), who also lie 7th overall (as the men and women are racing together).

Nikos Kaklamanakis, currently ranked 9th in the world, has opened the series with a bullet, which is clearly how he would like to continue, especially when sailing on home waters. However, world ranked number 4, Nick Dempsey (GBR) is close behind him.
Alessandra Sensini (ITA), who is currently ranked 12th in the world, leads the women’s fleet after one race.

Having hot-footed it over from Puerto Sherry, Cadiz, where last week they were training for the 2003 ISAF World Sailing Championships, reigning World Champions and world ranking leaders, Iker Martinez and Xavier Fernandez (ESP) have posted a commanding 1, 2 and 3 placing to lead the 49er fleet.
A superb result for Kevin Orlandi and Nicolas Cau, who sit in second overall. Not bad for this duo who are ranked 96th in the world.

A small nine boat, three nation fleet for the Stars, which sees Francesco Bruni and Antar Vigna (ITA) leading after 2 races. The duo are not currently ranked, so if their results keep pace they will make their first entry on the next world ranking release on 6 May. Francesco Bruni, has proved his skill across the classes as he is also currently ranked 48th in the 49er and previously has sailed a Laser at elite level.
